USTA Mixed Doubles Team

Calling all BCA tennis players. This is early, but I wanted to put a "bug" in everyone's ear before summer hits and vacation time away begins!

Darr and Gena Smith are interested in starting a USTA combo mixed doubles team. A combo team is one in which the level is the combined rating of match partners. This would be a 7.0 team so you may be ranked anywhere from 3.0-4.0.

Play takes place on Friday evenings. This would be very casual, very fun! Bring kids or not - as you prefer. This would be a great way for members to enjoy the beautiful new facilities and spend time together.

Registration does not open until August, and play does not begin until late September, but for those of you who may need time to think about it, you have plenty! If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Tennis coordinator via e-mail (debjwhite@bellsouth.net).

Please read all of the way to the bottom of this email to understand the key dates for pool opening, swim team, tennis courts, annual meeting and pool party. The renovation to our facilities is almost complete. Please be patient while we are in the home stretch these next two weeks. Below are the key dates in date order.

Tennis Courts Temporarily Open - Saturday, May 12
Swim Team Land Practice - Thursday, May 17
Swim Team Pool Practice Starts - Sunday, May 20
Pool Opens to Members - Friday, May 25
Tennis Courts Likely Closed - Friday, May 25 thru Thursday, May 31
Annual Pool Party - Friday, June 1

Tennis Courts

- Main gate is being repaired - must use back gate - combination lock is 1218
- Lock back gate when leaving the courts and take trash out
- Courts will most probably be closed May 25 thru May 30 for additional resurfacing and windscreen installation

Swim Team

- A few swim team practices are being impacted by the pool deck renovation
- Once the decking is completed all of the new pool furniture will need to be built
- Parents will need to bring chairs to sit on during practice until new furniture is ready
- Swimmers will need to wear shoes at all times when not in the pool – due to construction
- Not sure yet when bathrooms will be completed but will be finished by May 25

Camp Byrnwyck Cancelled

I am sorry to send this notice, but the decision has been made to cancel Camp Byrnwyck because of low interest. There were only 13 campers signed up, and after talking with BCA leadership, they decided it would be best to spend resources in ways that would benefit more children. They also thought it was important to go ahead and cancel now so that parents who did register would have enough time to make other plans. I am sorry; I sent out several e-blasts and emailed last year's campers too, but we couldn't get enough participation, and it was time to start ordering t-shirts and supplies. I understand why this decision was made, and I hope you will too.

Update on Tennis Courts

The courts are closed until the court resurfacing is completed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We know it appears that the courts are ready for play, but they are not. Upon inspection with the resurfacing company, it was decided that the courts need an additional surface coat. The company is trying to apply the additional coating ASAP but is constrained by the weather. Based on the current weather forecast, it appears that Thursday (5/10) may be the first day that they can get back in to apply the additional surface coating. The courts will not reopen until after this work is complete and the courts have had sufficient time to dry.

In the interim, the fence company will be on site this week performing maintenance items on the tennis court fencing. The building materials for the new tennis pavilion are to be delivered 5/8. While the pavilion is being constructed and parts of the existing sidewalk are being jack hammered, it will be very busy and noisy around the courts.

TENTATIVE COURT OPENING SCHEDULE: If you can stand the noise and debris, and if the weather permits the application of the additional court resurfacing material, with sufficient dry time and an inspection of the surface, the plan is for the courts to be open this weekend. If you have a critical need for court time over the weekend, and would like to avoid the uncertainty of court availability, there are a couple of tennis court options very close by. Murphy Candler and Ashford Park have free courts or Blackburn Tennis Center courts can be rented for a nominal fee.

When the construction of the new tennis pavilion is complete, the courts will be closed for a day to install new windscreens. I will give the membership as much notice as possible of this date. When scheduling court time, you must include your name so that you can be contacted (i.e., do not use the identifier line to schedule t2 time without including your name). Opening Pool Party on June 1st!!

Cinco de Mayo may be over, but mark your calendars for the annual Byrnwyck opening pool party Fiesta on June 1st!! Back by popular demand, we'll have tacos, margharitas, and a pinata contest, while enjoying rockin' tunes from DJ Jeff Hayden!

TENNIS COURTS CLOSED UNTIL 5/12

Camp Byrnwyck registration deadline

Camp Byrnwyck is going to be June 4 - 8 from 12:30 - 3:30. We'll have tennis, pool games and arts and crafts. Cost is $135 for the week and you can pay on the first day of camp. Tennis Courts Closed

Byrnwyck Round Robin

Byrnwyck will host a family tennis round robin tournament on Friday, June 29 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Mixed doubles teams will consist of a parent and child (more than 1 team per family is permissible). Cost is $5.00 per individual. Mail Stolen From Mailboxes

Please be aware that the police were in the neighborhood around 1:45AM on Friday morning. They went to the Fulton's to return their junk mail, which had been scattered at the Swim/Tennis. They also found mail from several homes in the West Nancy Creek area at the S/T. The mail was not delivered along Byrnwyck Road until around 5:00PM on Thursday. Be careful about leaving mail overnight.

swim team page, registration and revised calendar

I am happy to report that the swim team page on our site, www.byrnwyck.org, is back up and working nicely again, mostly... sadly, the online registration is not performing up tp par. Therefore it has been disabled and we are asking that you go back to downloading the pdf form and sending it in. You can find it on the center left of the swim team page in a blue links box: http://www.byrnwyck.org/SwimTeam.aspx I also have to report that we may have lost some of the registrations already entered. Don't worry, though, we do have all of the payments. That area is working perfectly. In fact, that remains the way to pay for the 2012 season. If we did lose your registration info we can reconcile with the payment information. You have not lost your spot on swim team.

Also, Head Coach Andrew found a mistake or two on the swim team calendar during our meeting this past Sunday. A revised calendar has been uploaded. That can be found on the same page but in the blue links box on the right or follow this link: http://www.byrnwyck.org/SwimModule.aspx?id=347

If you have not yet registered your swimmers please do so asap! Since we are going back to hard copies it slows us down a little. The tennis courts will be resurfaced either the 1st or 2nd week of May. The start date will depend on the weather and cannot be determined until 3 or 4 days in advance. If you schedule court time for the 1st or 2nd week of May, please be sure to include your name so that I can contact you when the dates are finalized. Once the work starts, the courts will be closed for 4 days.

Dear members,

I know many of you were trying to register your swimmers the past few days only to find the swim team page not working. It is up and running just fine now so please get those swimmers signed up.

We apologize for any inconvenience and frustration this may have caused. Please also let this serve as a reminder if you have not gotten around to it yet. Remember, rates increase after April 29th so take advantage of the early discount. Renovation update

The renovation project is on schedule to be completed in early May and is within budget! Check out the progress pictures on our website or drive by the swim/tennis area to see for yourself!

The Board wishes to thank the 139 of our 141 members (99%) who have already paid the assessment. Getting the $$ in so fast was a critical path element to enabling the work to be completed in time for the pool opening this May.

Many major project milestones have been completed thus far:

- Project permitting
- New dormer windows and roof on the pool house
- Demolition of the bathrooms
- Demolition of the tennis pavilion
- Restoration of the swim/tennis entry sign
- Saline upgrade ordered and scheduled for late April
- Tennis court resurfacing ordered and scheduled for early May

Many thinks go to a large number of folks who have worked tirelessly to make this all happen. Check out the next issue of the Byrnwyck Beacon to see who's been involved.

It's a great time to live in Byrnwyck!

2012 Swim Team Registration

Dear neighbors,

Swim team registration for the 2012 Byrnwyck Blue Dolphins season is now available online. As many of you know, there is a major renovation taking place at the Byrnwyck pool. These include new bathrooms and a saline system (bye-bye greeen hair!). Therefore, this year all payments and registrations will take place online via our website, www.byrnwyck.org. We will not have a physical registration at the pool. We will have a swim suit fitting with Kast-A-Way swim wear at an early practice in May. Or you may contact Kast-A-Way at the Chamblee Dynamo location. Our team suit remains Speedo-Zebra Haze in blue. There also will be a link on our swim team page soon with all the pertinent swim suit information.

Three out of four of our dynamic coaching staff will return in 2012. Our head coach will be Andrew Thompson. Also returning are Meagan Guenther and Ryan Vaughn. Joining our staff is Takunda Mafweka, another rising senior and swim team member from Marist. I know we'll all make him feel welcome and he will be dynamite with our swimmers.

Suzanne Simkin and Nanette Vaughn are returning as swim team coordinators as is Susan Viers as treasurer. Joining us as membership coordinator is Jennifer Kramer. Liz Shaw has generously agreed to head up our team parties once again. We still need a volunteer to take control of concessions. There are only two home meets this year so it's an easy year for a beginning concessions parent. Concessions is an important way that our swim team earns money for many things including paying our fabulous coaches.

Again, all registration and credit card payments will be taken online. You can find everything on the swim team page of www.byrnwyck.org. Or follow this link to get to the registration page and this link for the payment page. Everything else you need is on the swim team page of the site. You'll notice the calendar and all other links on the right side of the page. And don't forget to go ahead and sign up for your mandatory volunteer duties after you have registered. Early sign up ensures you get the job and meet you most want.

We look forward to seeing everyone back at the newly renovated pool this May. What a great way to kick off our 2012 season!

2. Scroll down to find your family listing (sorted alphabetically by last name). Tab over to review your data for accuracy.

Renovation Assessment

The renovation steering and other committees are working as quickly as possible to ensure that our approved pool and tennis plans are executed on time to enjoy our summer season. The one critical component we need from you is to have your renovation assessment paid so that there are no delays due to cash flow for the project.

To date I have received payments from 52 of the 141 members, (35%), and want to thank those for responding so quickly to our financing. I urge those of you who have not paid to get your checks to me no later than March 15th, or this week as stated on your invoice. Missing Cat

SPRING TENNIS UPDATE

Spring is almost here and that means it is time to play some tennis. We have four confirmed ALTA teams representing Byrnwyck this spring and possibly a 5th mixed doubles USTA team that would play on Friday nights. We have also signed the contract to resurface the courts which is scheduled for early May (the final date is dependent on weather conditions). I will be notifying the membership as soon as the dates for repair/resurface are finalized.

The four ALTA tennis teams representing Byrnwyck are:

1. U12 Girls managed by Kellee Hoad and co-managed by Teri Proctor

2. U14 Girls managed by Stephanie Meer and co-managed by Jennifer Demba

3. U12 Boys managed by Pat Stockmeyer and co-managed by Julia Jernigan

4. C3 Thursday Ladies team captained by Deb White and co-captained by Suzette Snell

Looking forward to another great season of tennis in Byrnwyck. When the final decision is made on the Friday night team, I will send an email letting you know who to contact if you are interested in playing.

By know everyone should have received your assessment invoice with payment due March 15. If you have not received your invoice, please email me immediately at mike.strang@ssnga.net

Everyone remember, the majority of the renovation project is scheduled to be completed by May 1. What this means is that we need the funding to insure that there are no work stoppages causing delays in construction. We desperately need everyone to pay by March 15th so there are no cash flow issues.

I will be sending out a reminder email from time to time that will also include the total number of members who have paid. At this time, 7 out of our 141 members have paid.

Renovation Vote Final Result

RE: Special Meeting February 19, 2012

Our membership voted overwhelmingly this evening to approve the proposed renovation project. Member turnout was at an all time high with 102 (72.3%) of our members voting. Pursuant to the BCA By-Laws, the minimum number of votes for a quorum (25%) and the minimum percentage of approving votes (66.7%) were both surpassed. The final vote results were:

"Yes" votes=86 (84.3)
"No" votes=16 (15.7)

Mary Margaret Heaton, our Project Manager, says that she could still use some help if anyone wants to volunteer. MMH and her project leads have to complete final design requirements with the contractor over the next 2-3 weeks prior to construction beginning in earnest. That said, you will start to notice some work beginning almost immediately such as tree remediation around the tennis courts and work on the wading pool.

It is now only 3 weeks until the annual Byrnwyck Progressive Dinner on Saturday, February 25 from 6:30 PM-9:30 PM.

Three Byrnwyck families have graciously agreed to open their homes to us. Press Release Citizens for North DeKalb, Inc. today announced the release of thsibility study for a proposed city of Brookhaven. The study, authored by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, was funded through private donations. The volunteer citizens group is pleased to have reached this important milestone on the path to potentially changing the form of governance for our community.The study, and related material, can be accessed on the organization's website at: www.citizensfornorthdekalb.org/faq.htm

The report provides estimates of revenues and expenditures that a city of Brookhaven, if incorporated, could anticipate. Stan Segal, a spokesperson for the group, said, "I am encouraged by this report. Based on current tax revenues and estimated expenditures, a city of Brookhaven would realize a budget surplus. The feasibility study already reflects a higher level of service than DeKalb County currently provides. The surplus could be used to finance a property tax reduction or a level of service beyond that contemplated in the study, or both."

State Representative Mike Jacobs has scheduled two town hall meetings next week on this issue: Tuesday, Nov. 15th, 7pm at Cross Keys High School, and Thursday, Novl. 17th, 7pm, Montgomery Elementary School.

Hello, All -- Happy Fresh-Veggie-Eaters and Wannabes!

The first delivery of the Dillwood Farms CSA arrived. Many people -- including me -- were eatin' good Thursday evening! There's nothing like fresh-picked, pesticide-free veggies and free-range chicken eggs. Yum!

The great thing about the Dillwood Farms CSA is that there is NO subscription fee and you can order as much -- or as little -- as you want of whatever you want from the list of Dillwood Farms' weekly harvest (published online Sunday evening or Monday morning). There is no requirement to order weekly, either. Order as often -- or as infrequently -- as you like. Order whenever and whatever suits you. Dillwood Farms is very flexible -- very different from most CSAs.

Just make sure you have a key to the tennis courts (because it also opens the exterior door to the ladies restroom shower area where the individually bagged orders are left). No key? Check with Barb Halaburt (barbmom2@aol.com).

Ready to order? Then check the Dillwood Farms harvest online on Monday, order by noon on Wednesday and pick up after 4 PM on Thursday.

Or not. There is NO requirement to order weekly; NO minimum order requirement.

Payment is via a PayPal account or your credit card. If you order something that turns out to be unavailable, you will receive credit to your PayPal account or credit card (whichever you used) by Friday following the Thursday delivery -- and you will be notified about the credit via e-mail.

Would you like to have fresh, locally grown, organic produce delivered right to our neighborhood? Our neighbor Sandy Spruill is heading up a wonderful effort to start a CSA group (Community Supported Agriculture) right here in Byrnwyck! SPRING JUNIOR ALTA TEAMS

Several of the girls and boys on current Junior ALTA teams will age up as of this Spring (2012) In hopes of keeping the Junior tennis program viable, we are looking for interested boys ages 10-11 and girls ages 12-13 to play in the spring. Although it seems early to consider this, the roster deadline for the Spring season is in early January!

ALTA age qualifications for the 2012 seasons are as follows: U12 - less than 12 years of age as of January 1, 2012. U14 - less than 14 years of age as of January 1, 2012.

How to Book a Pool Party

Dear members,

Ah, the beginning of summer and many requests to book a pool party. Just a quick recap to get you started...

Firstly, you must be a paid member in good standing. So, if you have not yet sent in your payment please do so.

Next, check the Byrnwyck calendar on the website to be sure you are not overlapping on any already scheduled club events such as swim team practice, a meet, or a general Byrwnwyck neighborhood event. You can find the calendar under the "general" tab at the top right of the site. Then get your party on the Byrwnwyck books by contacting Lisa Alexander, the BCA secretary. Then, contact Sweetwater to book extra lifeguards. You may not think your party is large enough to warrant an extra guard but remember there are also the normal Byrnwyck members and their guests at the pool. The guards have lots to keep their eyes on in normal conditions.

It’s time for a new neighborhood directory!

While the information on the Byrnwyck website is a great resource, many of you have expressed interest in a hardcopy directory too. Two neighbors, Barb Halaburt and Nanette Vaughn, have stepped forward to lead a committee to create an updated neighborhood directory this spring.

The Byrnwyck website (www.Byrnwyck.org ) will be the base from which we start our directory data collection process. So, in order to get the most accurate and up to date contact information, we need everyone to visit the site and confirm/update your profile information. It is very important that you confirm your email, as that will be our primary source of contact as we progress through the data collection and confirmation process.

We need your help!

Our neighborhood directory has not been updated in about 6 years. I think we can all agree, this is an important neighborhood project!! To get the work done, Barb and Nanette will need the help of 4-5 additional volunteers. Each volunteer will serve as a block captain to collate and confirm data for 15 – 20 homes. This volunteer job can be performed from your home and will only take an hour or two of your time each week for about 4 weeks. We need folks from all sections of the neighborhood.

We are also seeking 1-2 volunteers who can help solicit neighbors and local businesses for sponsorships.

Please consider helping out on this very important task. If you can help with either data collection or sponsorships, please contact Barb Halaburt at barbmom2@aol.com. Remember: many hands make light work! Please pitch in and help if you can.

Update on Renovation Discussions

As we closed the pool season last year, we got robust feedback from the community survey on the facilities. We know there’s always room for improvement, and many of you signed on to be part of the committee to look into how we might make address those concerns. Your Renovation Committee worked hard throughout the off-season, contemplating what we could and should do, taking into consideration a wide array of opportunities and constraints. Hopefully you followed some of the conversation by looking at the meeting minutes posted on the Byrnwyck.org discussion boards.

We focused on the priorities laid out by the survey results, including improving the bathrooms, community space and parking. Much of the discussion focused on how to meet the varying appetites for spending, while coming together with a consensus we can all be proud of. We wrote (and edited, and re-wrote, and edited again . . . ) a detailed Request for Proposals for architects to help us with the project. After screening over a dozen firms and taking four on separate site tours, we settled on one that we feel confident will be a strong partner and guide for our neighborhood.

Your Renovation Committee will be meeting with the architects next week for a first peek at their ideas, and we expect to have significant progress on the planning to report to you by the annual meeting on May 15th. We look forward to sharing ideas with you over the summer!

Survey Results and Next Steps

Thank you so much for your input in the recent Byrnwyck survey. We had incredible participation - almost 100 of you took the time to share your thoughts, suggestions, compliments and concerns. Since there was such interest shown, we wanted to give you an overview of the results and next steps in this e-mail, but also invite you to continue to conversation on our website. Many of you raised important issues that deserve thoughtful discussion, and we've gotten those started on the Byrnwyck.org boards.

RESULTS OVERVIEW

We got a lot of great feedback in the survey, and those results can be seen in full as an Excel file on www.byrnwyck.org in the discussion board topics.

Specifically on the question of upgrades, almost 80% of us want to have some work done on the facilities, but the level of expense people are interested in varies. About 17% want "touch-ups" (up to $50k), 20% want "minor renovation" ($50k - $200k), 18% want "overhaul" ($200k and $400k), and 16% want a "major overhaul" ($400k - $750k). About 6% want a complete first class overhaul of $750k+.

While almost 40% are interested in spending $200k+ on the facilites, we heard from many people concerned about the economy or opposed to any improvements. Since any of these improvements must be voted on and passed by 2/3 of voting members (Inside Byrnwyck), the group of volunteers that has decided to work on this will certainly take everyone's input into consideration as we develop options to present to the community.

NEXT STEPS
Several of you have kindly offered to take part in the process, and we have set our first meeting for this Sunday, September 13th at 8pm at the Starbucks at Johnson Ferry and Ashford Dunwoody. All are welcome.

If you have any other thoughts, please use the discussion boards at Byrnwyck.org as your main vehicle to share them so that everyone has equal access to the conversations. And of course, the Byrnwyck Board of Directors is always eager to hear your thoughts and concerns directly.

Dear neighbors,

I added a photo album entitled "Byrnwyck Pets" to the website. Go to members and then choose photo albums to find it. I also realized that you do not need to send me a photo. You can upload your own Fido pic. It's very easy. When you get to the photo album page just follow the instructions and put your information in the caption area. Space is a little limited there so just make sure you put the important basics. Of course, if you have a photo editing program you could add info in the picture, too. I encourage all pet owners to add a photo even if you think yours could never get away. I keep a close eye on my two but they have been know to escape and go for an adventure. Usually, to eat the Little's flowers.

If you have any trouble adding the information or feel uncomfortable with it I am happy to assist or do it for you.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before. Well, better late than never.

Empty nester discount

There have been a few questions about the 'Empty Nest' discount. Please be aware that the following is outlined in the BCA bylaws.

If you qualify, please provide the necessary documentation with your paid invoice.

Please note the discount does not apply retroactively.

'A permanent member who executes the member declaration not later than November 1, 2000 shall be eligible for Senior Membership status at any time during their ownership of a Membership Lot upon presentation of evidence to the Board of Directors that : (a) at least one Owner of such Lot is at least fifty-eight (58) years or older; and (b) no person under the age of eighteen (18) years resides in such Owner's dwelling more than six (6) months a year. No other Members shall be eligible for Senior Membership status. The Board shall have the authority to establish fees for Senior Membership as set forth herein.'
